1. What will my box contain? - Your box will usually contain 5-8 vegetables. The vegetables will be fresh
picked and depend on seasonal availability. Our vegetables will be staples for your meals. While the box will
contain some herbs and exotic vegetables, most of the box will be basic vegetables for a healthy meal.
2. Will my box contain fruit? - SCF is predominately a vegetable grower. We do grow strawberries and
Asian pears. You will see them in your box when available.
3. Can I have eggs too? - We no longer offer egg subscriptions but will have some eggs available for sale
during the season.
4. How much will be in my box? - You will receive enough vegetables to provide a meal portion for each
vegetable. How many meals you can serve will be determined by how much your family eats! For example
typical shares Strawberries - pt. Beans - 1lb, Potatoes - 2lbs , Tomatoes -1.5 lbs, lettuce - 0.5 lb. Sizes will vary
depending on availability. Our goal is to provide a portion size enough for at least one meal and to provide
variety in the box.
5. Some CSA's advertise the box will feed a family of 4 for a week, is this true? - This is a common
error in CSA expectations. Your box contains $24.00 worth of vegetables based on Frederick Farmers Market
pricing. It is unreasonable to expect to feed a family of four on $24.00 per week from any source.
6. Do you sell 1/2 shares? - We do not sell half shares. In the past some people have gone together to
split a box. We do not recommend this since our vegetables are not easily divided up. Some portions when
divided may be too small to give enough when divided. Some shares you will want it all for yourself!
7. What benefits do I get besides vegetables? - Your CSA purchase supports local agriculture. This
creates jobs in the county, preserves open space, and allows us to continue our environmental work.
Additionally we offer discounts throughout the year to our CSA members on bulk vegetables and you will be
invited to an open house at the farm for free. This will allow you to tour the farm where your vegetables come
from. A great learning experience for all!
8. Do I get to choose what is in my box? - The selection of what goes in the box is based on what is
available. We choose here at the farm. This will expose you to some new items and is part of the excitement in
your box. We suggest if you have an item you do not prefer we suggest you trade with other CSA members.
9. What if the weather is bad ? - We do our best to get you full share value. Over the last two years we
have had terrible droughts. In each year we have provided full share value. It has been tough at times and in each
year we provided an extra box at the end to make up for some shortages. Every year we expand our capability
to grow quality products to full fill our obligations. With this said a CSA subscription does mean you are
assuming some of the risk of farming in return for the freshest produce so we cannot guarantee what produce
will be available. We focus on total year value not weekly box value, so box value may vary from week to week.
